Julian Assange's flight VJT199 took off from Bangkok on 25 June, heading towards US airspace and Saipan Island, following a layover in the Thai capital. According to court filings in the US district court for the Northern Mariana Islands, US prosecutors said they anticipate Assange will plead guilty to the criminal count of conspiring to obtain and disclose classified documents relating to the national defense of the United States. WikiLeaks posted a statement on social media saying that Assange was freed from Britain's Belmarsh maximum security prison on 24 June morning, after having spent 1,901 days there. He was granted bail by the High Court in London and was released at Stansted Airport during the afternoon. Following his release on bail, he departed the UK for Australia. His wife Stella confirmed on X that 'Julian is free' and thanked supporters. El fundador de WikiLeaks, Julian Assange, se declaró este martes culpable de violar la ley de espionaje de EE.UU. por la filtración de documentos clasificados, como parte de un acuerdo con el Gobierno estadounidense que le permitirá volver a Australia tras una saga legal de 14 años.
Assange, de 52 años, llegó a la sede judicial a bordo de un vehículo blanco. Ante la expectación de decenas de cámaras y periodistas que le aguardaban, descendió del vehículo ataviado con un traje oscuro, camisa blanca y corbata de color plomo oscuro para adentrarse en el edificio.
Con su pelo blanco peinado hacia atrás, no respondió a las preguntas de la prensa. Sin embargo, cuando un reportero le preguntó si prefería el clima de las Islas Marianas o de Londres, se detuvo un momento, pero continuó su camino sin responder.
El acuerdo establece que se le dará crédito por tiempo servido, de manera que Assange quedará en libertad tras la vista y podrá poner rumbo a Australia, donde le esperan su mujer, Stella, y sus dos hijos.
